Maybe you could try making a dvd image using some short (only a few minutes long) video clip and use a chapterlist like this: 0, 30,60,90,120. If I'm right, the chapters should be 30 seconds long. About subtitles

If I make a DVD of an .avi file that's originally neither 4:3 nor 16:9, there are black "boxes" in large white areas, especially in fast-paced action scenes.
