free space requirement

I have a 350MB XviD movie in a .avi container. When I load it into AVI2DVD and select DVD-5 output, it wants 9.4GB free space whether or not I select the make ISO box. I have tried selecting different encoders and different audio bit rates with no change. Is this normal? I can understand 9.4 GB as worst case for both .vob and .iso, but if I don't make the .iso, I thought it would only need half of that space.

Do I really need 9.4GB of free space to create a VIDEO_TS folder only? For comparison, DIVX2DVD produces a finished folder size of 1.1GB, but I don't know how much free space it uses during the conversion. My disk has just over 5GB of free space. Do I need a bigger disk?

For AVI2DVD to be able to do all the processing required to convert your project, you need at least 9GBs of free space. Most conversion app such as this need similar amounts. Time to burn off some of your other stuff to CD-R?

OK, I can make enough space on at least one drive in my network. BTW, the other two applications I've used for this do not require 9.4GB. They only require 4.7GB. The two are VSO DIVX2DVD and Roxio CopyDVD 8. The older Roxio versions used an early limited version of VSO DIVX2DVD, but version 8 has their own homegrown transcoder. So far, it is really terrible and I'm sorry I paid for it. Just goes to show that commercial software is not always superior. Wish I found this program first!

yep I have used the VSO app also, & while very fast, the quality is really pretty poor.

Yes, it is fast but buggy. In particular, it has trouble when there are bad audio blocks. The video encoding rate is also limited to 3Mbps, though I'm not experienced enough to know how much the higher video bit rates available through AVI2DVD improve image quality.
