I have the same problem as you guys. All my Prison Break ep. work fine to add subtitles with AviSub, but not Lost and 24.
After doing some research I came up with a working method.
I don't know why, but it works and thats good enough for me.
Now I have added subtitles to several Lost and 24 episodes.
This is my solution.
Download AVIMux_GUI:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AVIMux_GUI
Install and open the program.
Add your Avi file in "open files"(drag and drop) window.
Click the Avi file and click the button "generate data source from file".
Now the video and audio lines appear in the window below.(There should be no line with subtitles)
Click Start button and save the file.
When finished, takes about 3 minutes, open your new Avi file with AviSub, load subtitles and Generate Subbed Avi.
Hope it works for you as good it worked for me
By the way, trustfm, Avisub is a good program.

this topic i made it sticky because we have 3 sort of solutions :
1)
robert7's post --> change fourcc divx3 to DIVX
2)
newnews's comment --> "MPEG Quantization not Supported"
3)
isah's interesting post --> Use AVIMux_GUI and regenerate an new avi
So we got a sort of solution after all !!!

another tip is that the path and the name of the avi must be simple !
Try to put/rename your file like this:
c:\movies\lost219.avi

I added subs to Lost ep. 19 yesterday, it worked fine with my method. Maybe you shoud try to download Lost.S02E19.HDTV.XviD-LOL version. That's the one I used. Otherwise I don't have any suggestions. Sorry!
