I really like txt2Vobsub program, and want to thank you for it.
The only problem I have with it is the color palette when played on DVD player. Generated idx/sub subtitles look just fine on a PC, but look very weird, blurry, pinkish-blueish - and, basically, unacceptable on any DVD player with which I tried them.
I read the tutorial, and see that there is a suggestion to use color scheme from IFO file. But as I understand, IFO is a part of DVD format, and if I had it, I would not need to use txt2Vobsub program - I would just watch the movie in DVD format. The fact is - there is a movie in .avi format, and subtitles in .srt. That's it. If the srt was in ANSI, it would be no problem either, because a DVD player can support srt subtitles with latin fonts.
But my subtitles are in the language that uses different charset, so I have to convert srt into idx/sub.

So - back to my question. Is it possible to set color palette in idx/sub without having IFO information? Does anyone manage to use it properly?

I was thinking if changing the picture in the program GUI interface could make any difference - so I tried and loaded a screenshot from the movie that I was converting, to replace the default picture. But it did not seem to help.

Please, advise.

Have you tested :
1) PC ONLY ontion on txt2vobsub [1st option on Colors Settings]
2) DVD ONLY ontion on txt2vobsub (with success only on hardware dvd) [2nd option on Colors Settings]
3) SAFE COLORS [4rth option on Colors Settings] (use yellow grey black)

Tell me what you got with these settings

fast answer : Yes and no. All depends by the DVD manifacture.
Long answer :
The STANDARD format of the dvd subtitles is the SUP
SUP DVD SUBPICTURE DOES NOT includes the COLOR information itself !!! It is included on ifo .
I will keep it as simple as i can ...
1.IFO says : 1st color yellow 2nd color black 3color white ... ETC... till to 16th color palette
1.VOB that as the sup / idx/sub has this information : SUBTITLE ONE HAS THE PALETTE 1,2,3,4
(uses the fisrt color from the ifo palette as text color the second one as border etc...)

Now idx vobsub has :
1---># The original palette of the DVD in PGC#1
palette: FF807F, 80807F, 008080, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000, 000000

2---># Custom colors (transp idxs and the four colors)
custom colors: ON, tridx: 0001, colors: 000000, 808080, FFFFFF, 0000FF

SO THERE ARE FIVE? POSSIBLE CASES :
A) Your player does not give a damn about original palette OR Custom colors so wants ifo file (rare) Treats vobsubs LIKE EXTERNAL SUP'S !!!
B) Your player wants the original palette in RGB (rare) PC CASE [1st option on Colors settings]
C) Your player wants the original palette YCRCB (most often) [2nd or 3rd Color setting]
D) Your player wants the Custom colors palette in RGB [never visted but possible !!!] [4rth setting]
E) Your player wants the Custom colors palette in YCRCB [never visted but possible !!!] [not covered from txt2vobsub] it is an really theorical scenario !

All depend by the DVD manifacture. The most possible senario is C the scenarios D,E
are only theoricals i did not have found them in the reality

trustfm, thank you very much for your fast reply. I will test with all the scenaria that you suggested, and post the results.

I tested the settings, and can say that Safe colors palette works well for yellow text. If I chose a white color for text, then safe color is not really white, and the subs look not so good when played on a DVD player.
However, I discovered that no matter what settings I enter in the Txt2Vobsub, I can change color settings in .idx file after it's created, - and that seems to work well.

Could you please correct me if I am wrong - that .ids file has a total control on the VobSub colors?

Yes but some colors are on RGB mode and some others in YCRCB !!!

Now i realized that Son2vobsub does not generates correct vobsubs [wrong color palette] and the next version of txt2vobsub will produce nativelly the vobsubs !
This will help obtaining correct (more correct lets say) colors with the help of EXTERNAL IFOS
