Interlaced Source and PAL to NTSC options

I see that there is a "Interlaced Source" checkbox and a "PAL to NTSC" option.

I once created a DVD from an AVI (DivX) and it came out garbled (and B&W) on my NTSC DVD player (I live in the USA).

So I just checked the "Interlaced Souce" and the "PAL to NTSC" option and then the DVD looked fine.

The quesiton I have is why did those options make a difference?

I thought all AVI DivX videos were inherintly non-interlaced and the PAL/NTSC format did not apply to AVI videos - is my assumption correct?

I see that after I've selected the source AVI that the "NTSC to PAL" option is greyed out but the "PAL to NTSC" is selectable (by default unchecked). Does that imply that my source AVI is PAL format - i'm confused.

If an AVI video can my Interlaced or non-interlaced how would I know if it is or is not - what utility would allow me to find out ??

Thank you for the help.

Seems quite a few people are asking this. For myself I live in Canada thus NTSC area. How do I make sure my final DVD output is in NTSC as opposed to PAL?

TIA to anyone who can clear this up...
